God intends to live among the people. The people are to honor God's holiness by maintaining ceremonial purity. If they become ceremonially impure ("unclean"), then they dishonor God's presence among them.
Infections and discharges cause ceremonial impurity. Contact with ceremonially impure persons causes ceremonial impurity, and contact with certain objects that have contacted ceremonially impure persons causes ceremonial impurity.
There are a lot of details in all of this--too many details, I suspect, for some people to manage.
